ABOUT
What happens when a chef and a photographer get married? They create a home they call The Stocks House.
Joel and Emily Stocks have been cooking and photographing since they first met in Portland, Oregon. Whether on their own, or while hosting private events and dinners, they love to create and document the world of food. This site is where they share these stories and experiences, and is a way to connect and interact with them.
Joel is a Portland native who has been cooking professionally from the age of 15. After attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York, he's spent years traveling and working in kitchens around the country and world. His adventures have taken him through the kitchens of The French Laundry, Alinea, Willow's Inn, The Herb Farm, Restaurant Arzak, and Mirazur, as well as a number of restaurants throughout Portland. After his travels he returned to Portland to run a small tasting menu restaurant called Holdfast. It's there where he met Emily and their adventures began together.
Emily is from San Luis Obispo, California. She started taking photos at a young age and followed that passion to UCSC, where she studied film and digital media. After college, Emily continued to work as a photographer while pursuing her dream of running a vegan ice cream production business. Her photography job brought her to Portland in 2013, where she met Joel at the commissary kitchen she was producing ice cream in. They started taking photos and cooking together, and the rest is history. Emily continues to work as a food photographer and to teach vegan ice cream making.
